Economics: A boring must
It is not an exaggeration at all if I say all the subjects are equally boring when taught wrong and given the curriculum of our education system, I'm safe in proclaiming it as "a device to borify most interesting of the things". But even if we got adam smith himself to teach us, economics unanimously will be one of the most boring subjects to read and people who do majors in economics should get a life. (I've a major in economics, thanks.)
Well, the question stands why is economics so dull? Well A is obviously the way it is taught, B can be that economists and teachers while teaching only apply the analysis of maths and science in economics but perfectly excludes the philosophy, the art, the moralistic discourse of economics from the discussion and because of this perception of economists that philosophies and art and "the should be's" would be inappropriate, students are missing out on alot of life lessons. I can guarantee nobody can deny the argument that the difference between self-interest and greed, the idea of market ethics and scientific ethics are something no subject can define better than economics. C reason can be not telling the students how important economics is to our daily lives just in the sense that it summarizes so many aspect of our daily lives such as our income, cost of goods and services, as well as the flow of money from taxpayers to the government.
Now the question arises that what can we do to make economics a fancy. We surely do not have a degrasse Tyson or a Carl sagan to make it mainstream. Well the answer is pretty easy, Inclusion of the artistic side of economics in the curriculum will do the needful. We've been taught that economics is art as well as science but we were made to focus on only one tier while forgetting the other. We and by we I mean teachers and government, need to inculcate the beautiful philosophy of economics, the should be's which are long forgotten. We must teach the students how important it is to read economics to live a happy and financially sound life. Without the knowledge of economics, no individual can decide.
1. Buying goods which give the highest satisfaction for the price.
2. The sunk cost fallacy I.E. The irretrievable cost.
3. Opportunity cost
4. The irrationality of man, the behavioural economics and biases.
5. The diminishing returns thingy which gives us the idea on how and how much to spend.
To conlcude, Economics is definitely a subject for all young men and women. Students should read on their own about the wrongs in the communist manifesto, the problematic morals of capitalism, the unintended unjustifiable theory of socialism and the great literature of chanakya arthashastra and so on and so forth. Teachers should make economics a subject of mathematical science with philosophical bases. Economics should be portrayed as a subject of inquiry and not indoctrination (unlike other subjects of art stream).
