Much प्रसंग, Very व्याख्या of "why I assassinated Gandhi"
Read a book which was in my booklist for a long time, "Why I assassinated Gandhi"- Nathuram Godse. It's not a book by Shri Godse but an account of aftermath of the vadh(वध), predominantly the court hearing and Shri Godse's address to the court.
I never respected Gandhi but before reading this book I definitely thought godse was a fanatic without reason but when a man replies to the chargesheet with 25 reasons THOROUGHLY explaining why he did what he did one can understand his decision was well thought of and not a caprice, impulse decision. Godse must be condemned he himself said so, but saying he was not a man of intellect and was only a tool is unjust. You can judge him all you want but after giving him a read.
When I read Gandhi's Experiment with truth (time waste.), Ambedkar's what congress and Gandhi have done to the untouchables (meh!) And Ambedkar's comment on Gandhi's death, I lost whatever scintilla (if I had any) of respect I had for Gandhi but after going through Shri Godse's address I LOATHE Gandhi now.
It's a great read, all the 201 pages are worth sharing but I'm sharing 9 of my favourite paras, quintessence (if you may) of the ideological approach behind the case. It's a great great book, and as the judge of the case Justice Shri Khosla writes in his book "Murder of the Mahatma and other cases from a judge's note book", "The audience was visibly and audibly moved. There was a deep silence when he
ceased speaking. Many women were in tears and men were coughing and
searching for their handkerchiefs. The silence was accentuated and made
deeper by the sound of a occasional subdued sniff or a muffled cough. It
seemed to me that I was taking part in some kind of melodrama or in a scene
out of a Hollywood feature film. I have, however, no doubt that had the audience of that day been constituted
into a jury and entrusted with the task of deciding Godse's appeal, they would
have brought in a verdict of ' not guilty' by an overwhelming majority."
